Other questions to be aware of when buying a compressor:

  • Where is the compressor and its parts manufactured?

Our main compressors, ELGi, are manufactured in India, Italy and America.

Atlas Copco and Chicago Pneumatic, also known as CP, manufacture their compressors in China, as well as other parts of the world.

Gardner Denver has manufacturing facilities in 30 different parts of the world, including Asia.

  • How much are you using the compressor in a given time frame? For example a joinery factory would on average use a compressor 6 hours per day/ 5 days a week, which is approx 1500 hr/yr, whereas a factory would average 10 hrs per day 6 days per week - approx 3000hrs per year.  Does your demand vary during the day?

  • Where will the compressor be located? Outdoor applications require special protection. Indoor compressors need to be at least 3 feet away from the wall to ensure proper airflow.

  • How much pressure (Kpa/PSI) do you require?

  • How much airflow (M3/min/CFM) do you require?

  • What motor kW do you require? This is directly related to the m3/min/CFM rating of a compressor.  Let your m3/min/CFM and Kpa/PSI requirements determine the kW.

  • What size and type of air tank do you require? The smaller the tank, the more the compressor has to work to keep up with demand.  Do you have room for a horizontal tank or would a vertical tank fit better?

  • What are the electrical requirements of the installation? ie do you have the correct fuse type?

  • What system control do you need?
